Onitsuka Tiger is known for its classics like the Mexico 66 or the Ultimate 81. The History of OT already started in 1949 when Kihachiro Onitsuka founded the company in Kobe, Japan. Kihachiro wanted to motivate the youth with the help sport and give them a new perspective. On the search of a new basketball shoe profile he got the final inspiration when eating a calamari. He designed the outsole of the first onitsuka tiger basketball shoe just like the tentacle of the animal. In 1966 OT released the Mexico 66, which was the first one to feature the typical Tiger Stripes. Like most brands OT used the Tiger Stripes in the beginning just to give the shoe more stability. Today the Tiger Stripes are the trademark of the Japanese brand. 11 years later Onitsuka Tiger fused with GTO Sport Nets and Jelenk Sportswear to build Asics. The name Asics stands for „Anima Sane In Corpore Sano“, meaning "a sound mind in a sound body".
