On the search of a new basketball shoe profile he got the final inspiration when eating a calamari. He designed the outsole of the first onitsuka tiger basketball shoe just like the tentacle of the animal. In 1966 OT released the Mexico 66, which was the first one to feature the typical Tiger Stripes. Like most brands OT used the Tiger Stripes in the beginning just to give the shoe more stability. Today the Tiger Stripes are the trademark of the Japanese brand. 11 years later Onitsuka Tiger fused with GTO Sport Nets and Jelenk Sportswear to build Asics. The name Asics stands for „Anima Sane In Corpore Sano“, meaning "a sound mind in a sound body".
